River Life Museum in Xiguan

Architectural Design "He Chong" or rivers form the lifeblood of Guangzhou's urban network and are the foundation of Guangzhou's unique cultural identity. These waterways have witnessed the transformation of Guangzhou's ancient water system and urban history, preserving the collective childhood memories of generations who played along their shores. In the past, many of these waterways were covered due to urban management concerns. However, in recent years, efforts to uncover and restore these canals have brought them back into public focus.

To reconnect people with this rich history, I have designed a 'River Life Museum' beside the Liwanchong. This museum aims to preserve and reflect upon the historical riverside lifestyle, reminding visitors of the vibrant scenes that once thrived along the canals. The museum also serves as a cultural hub, linking the architectural and social boundaries between tourists and the local Xiguan community. Through its exhibits, it offers a space to celebrate the harmony between urban life and traditional waterways, blending nostalgia with modernity.
In the depth of winter I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.
